How to Find Out If Fiber Is Available at Your Address
Fiber is the only consumer technology where upload matches download, and that single fact makes it detectable in measured data even when nobody will tell you who owns the strand. You cannot see the provider in speed-test numbers, but you can very often see the technology.
Start with the honest limitation
SignalScout does not list ISPs. The FCC's provider-availability dataset requires a registered account for bulk download and the FCC map's per-address lookup is blocked to automated requests, so a provider directory is a planned addition rather than something the tool does today. What it does show is the measured median download, upload, latency, and test count for the Ookla tile covering your address, from the 2026 Q1 data release. That turns out to be enough to make a strong inference about what technology is in the ground.

Ranges overlap, and these are indicative rather than absolute. But the upload column separates them cleanly in a way the download column does not.
How to read the inference correctly
The logic runs one way, not both ways.
- High measured upload strongly implies fiber is present. If a tile shows a 400 Mbps median upload, no cable, DSL, wireless or satellite technology produces that at scale. Somebody on that street is on fiber.
- Low measured upload does not prove fiber is absent. A tile median blends every household in it. If fiber was built last year and 90% of the street is still on cable out of inertia, the median upload will look like cable. The 2026 Q1 vintage also means very recent builds may not be represented yet.
Look at the distribution, not just your tile. If your tile shows a modest upload but two adjacent tiles show near-symmetric speeds, fiber has probably reached the area and stopped somewhere nearby. That is precisely the situation worth a phone call, because build boundaries move.
Confirming who actually sells it
Once measured data has told you fiber is plausible, these are the checks that resolve the provider question.
- FCC National Broadband Map, by address. It lists providers and technology codes per location. Remember it shows filed availability and maximum advertised speed, which tends to be optimistic — this explainer covers why.
- Every provider's own address checker. National fiber operators, the incumbent telco, and any regional overbuilder. Try the exact address, and try the neighbour's address too — a mismatch tells you where the build stops.
- The electric cooperative or municipal utility. In rural America these are now among the most common fiber builders, and they often do not appear in national comparison sites at all.
- Local subsidised builds. Search the county or state broadband office for RDOF, ReConnect, or BEAD awards covering your area. Awards come with build deadlines you can hold a provider to.
- Physical evidence. Orange conduit markers, new handholes in the verge, freshly lashed cable on poles, or an unused ONT box already mounted on the outside wall of a house.
- Neighbours. A local forum or a knock on a door produces the provider name, the real speed, and the install horror stories in one conversation.
What to ask before you believe it
"Available" is a slippery word. When a provider says yes, pin it down:
- Is the drop already at the property, or does this require construction?
- What is the installation charge, in writing, including any line extension?
- Is the plan symmetric, and what is the actual upload tier?
- What is the contract term and the post-promotional price?
- Can I have an install date now?
A provider that has genuinely passed your home answers all five quickly. A provider that filed you as serviceable but has not built to your street will get vague at question one.
If fiber is not there
Fiber is not the only acceptable outcome. Can SignalScout tell me if fiber is available at my address?
Not directly, because it does not list providers or technologies. What it shows is measured download, upload and latency for the tile covering your address, and a median upload close to the median download is a strong indicator that fiber is in use nearby.
Why does symmetric upload indicate fiber?
Cable, DSL, fixed wireless and satellite all allocate far more capacity to download than upload, so their uploads typically land between 1 and 50 Mbps. Fiber to the home has no such asymmetry constraint, and most fiber plans sell matching or near-matching upload, which no other consumer technology delivers at scale.
My tile shows low upload but I heard fiber was built here. Who is right?
Possibly both. The tile median blends every household in roughly a 610-metre square, so recent fiber with low take-up will be outvoted by neighbours still on cable, and the 2026 Q1 data vintage may predate a very recent build. Check the provider's address checker directly.
Is there a free way to see providers by address?
